ABOUT

I am an independent journalist and filmmaker. I write, shoot and produce for a wide range of international media – I have contributed to outlets including the BBC, the Guardian, the New York Times, Huffington Post, CNN, Channel 4, Sky News and National Geographic. I was Edit Producer and Archive Producer on ‘9/11: Inside the President’s War Room’, a landmark BBC/AppleTV+ feature documentary to mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks (Bafta winner, Editing: Factual; Bafta nominee, Single Documentary; Emmy nominee, Editing; Best Specialist Factual Programme, Broadcast Awards; Best Documentary, Rose D'Or). I shot, produced and directed ‘Gamblers Like Me’ for BBC Africa Eye (Best Documentary nominee, British Sports Journalism Awards).

As a writer, my long read on the team in Botswana who first sequenced Omicron won ‘Feature of the Year’ in the 2022 British Association of Science Writers Awards.

I have extensive experience working across sub-Saharan Africa, as well as in the Middle East and North Africa. I served for two years as Chair of the Foreign Correspondents' Association of East Africa, for two years as an elected Board Member of the Frontline Freelance Register. I am a 2017 Marshall Memorial Fellow, an IWMF Fellow, and in 2023 I was invited to join BAFTA as part of its Connect scheme.

HIGHLIGHTS

I tell stories about security, development, culture and human rights, using a range of media, including text, video, audio and photography. I’ve reported on violent extremism in Africa, in particular in Kenya and Somalia. I covered the brutal attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall in September 2013: in the aftermath, I interviewed survivors and first responders, including retelling one of the most dramatic stories of the massacre

I followed the trail of the world's 'most wanted woman', Samantha Lewthwaite, and covered the deepening tensions in Kenya's "war on terror". I exposed the earlier arrest of Woolwich killer Michael Adebolajo on suspicions of trying to join Somali militant group al-Shabaab.
